    Roger Binny Facts

  • He was the first Anglo-Indian to have represented India in cricket at the senior international level.
  • Although he is mostly remembered for his feats at the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup where he was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, he was also instrumental in India winning the 1985 World Series Cricket Championship in Australia. He was the leading wicket-taker in that tournament as well, with 17 wickets to his name.
  • Roger was a member of the national selection committee in the early and mid-2010s, a phase where his son Stuart’s cricketing performance on the domestic circuit was flourishing and he was regularly in contention for a place in the Indian senior national team across all formats. During such selection meetings, Roger used to leave the room whenever Stuart’s name came up for discussion to avoid allegations of ‘conflict of interest’.
  • He served as the president (2019-2022) of the KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association), the governing body for cricket in his home state team of Karnataka.
  • He had also previously worked as a development officer, briefly, for the ACC (Asian Cricket Council), a cricket organization that was established in 1983 to promote and develop the sport of cricket in Asia.
  • In the 2021 Indian Hindi-language sports drama film titled 83, his character was portrayed by Indian actor and model Nishant Dahiya.
