Expectant mother Keisha Sethi, 24, thought she was turning into a blue “Avatar” when she started to experience some strange pregnancy symptoms.
“It just happened overnight. It was quite crazy, actually, it was like I was leaking blue ink,” Sethi told Kennedy News. “I felt like an octopus.”
After Sethi finished using the bathroom, her boyfriend, Brad, noticed blue stains on the toilet seat. He asked, “Keisha, are you wearing something blue?”
The London resident, wearing white pajamas, realized she was leaving a trail of blue stains on her toilet, clothes, bedsheets and pillowcases.
“I thought I was turning into [a creature from] Avatar,” she admitted. “I tried to wipe it but it just would not come off.”
Determined to discover what was happening, Sethi contacted her medical provider, who initially thought the mother-to-be was joking.
“I called the triage up and they said they’d never heard of it. It’s so rare. The person I spoke to was laughing because she thought I was joking around.”
The couple researched why the pregnant mom was leaking blue for a week.
“I thought, ‘Is my pregnancy not agreeing with me? Is it my clothes? Did I eat something wrong?’ “
Sethi, who was seven months pregnant at the time, axed out the possibility of jeans staining her because she stopped wearing denim three months before the incident.
Finally, the couple determined she was experiencing a rare pregnancy symptom.
“It turns out it was just my skin and the sweat changing color due to hormones,” she revealed.
As a fitness coach specializing in women with Polycystic ovary syndrome — a problem with hormones that happens during the reproductive years — and hormonal changes, Sethi didn’t know hormonal changes could have someone leak blue.
“It lasted for about a week. It came ‘out of the blue’ and then just stopped,” she said.
Although Sethi did not disclose a medical professional’s diagnosis, Apocrine chromhidrosis is a very rare, idiopathic disorder of the sweat glands characterized by the secretion of colored sweat, according to the National Institutes of Health.
With intentions to bring awareness to the rare pregnancy symptom, Sethi posted a viral TikTok video with over 747,000 views unveiling her bizarre pregnancy experience.
“Mamas has anyone experienced this? Does it affect the baby in any way? I did call the maternity helpline but they said they’ve not heard of it & weren’t really helpful. I feel like a squid,” she captioned the clip.
Apparently, Sethi was not the only mama who had been feeling blue throughout their pregnancy. Moms all over commented underneath the viral video, sharing their experiences.
“When I was on maternity I met someone else who had the same thing! Apparently, it’s a hormone thing!” shared one mom.
“Omg this happened to my white clothes and I was convinced it was dye from my jeans but it never made sense,” sighed another.
“IT HAPPENED TO ME! I thought I was turning into a Smurf!” confessed a mom.
Sethi admitted social media provided her “extra reassurance” and helped her relax after hearing similar stories to hers.
“I’d say Google probably isn’t the most helpful thing these days,” she continues. “TikTok can be so much more helpful as people put their experiences on there.”
Lucky for Sethi she won’t have to see any more blue for a while, since she and her partner are expecting a baby girl any day now.
