Louis William “Lou” Merloni (born April 6, 1971) is a former Major League Baseball player and radio presenter in the United States. Merloni was discovered by ‘Buzz’ Bowers, a hall of fame scout, and played for the Boston Red Sox from 1998 to 2003. Merloni is well-known in the community for his numerous travels between the Red Sox and their Triple-A club, the Pawtucket Red Sox, dubbed the “Merloni Shuttle.” He also spent time with the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, and Anaheim Angels. Since his birth in Framingham, Massachusetts, Merloni has been dubbed “Sweet Lou” by Boston fans. He graduated from Providence College in 1993 and still maintains many single-season and career records for the Friars baseball club, which is now defunct. Merloni was a substitute player during the 1994 Major League Baseball strike, and as a result, he is not eligible for membership in the MLBPA. Merloni is most remembered for hitting a three-run home run off of José Rosado in his first major-league at-bat at Fenway Park on May 15, 1998. Merloni was called up to the Cleveland Indians on May 17, 2006, after starting the season at Triple-A. For the 2007 season, Merloni signed a deal with the Oakland Athletics. He spent the season with the Sacramento River Cats, the A’s Triple-A club. Merloni was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2007 Bricktown Showdown after guiding the River Cats to a 7-1 victory against the Richmond Braves. For the 2007 season, he was also named Best Defensive Player and Best Teammate. Merloni hit a home run and drove in four runs in the contest. Merloni was named the River Cats’ squad captain before to the game. Merloni started appearing as a co-host on WEEI-“Big AM’s Show” in March 2008.
