Archie Gronvold Tragically Killed in Collision Involving Hatton Northwood Volleyball Team Bus

A heart-wrenching accident occurred, resulting in the loss of Archie Gronvold’s life, as a pickup truck collided with a school bus transporting the Hatton Northwood volleyball team. The incident took place at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, near Highway 32 and 34th Street NE. Initial emergency calls reported multiple injuries, prompting a swift response with requests for numerous ambulances.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol’s investigation revealed that a school bus carrying members of the Hatton Northwood volleyball team was traveling north on Highway 32, en route to Petersburg for a game. At the same time, a pickup truck driven by 68-year-old Archie Gronvold from Barton, ND, was crossing Highway 32 via Nelson County Road 4. Tragically, the pickup truck was struck on the driver’s side by the bus.

The crash report indicates that a total of 27 individuals were on the bus during the incident, including 25 children, one coach, and one bus driver. The students’ ages ranged from 14 to 17. Coach Jana Mehus, aged 25 and from Hatton, was among the injured passengers and, along with others, was transported to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for treatment of crash-related injuries.

While several students were admitted to the hospital overnight, none sustained life-threatening injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. Another individual involved, 56-year-old bus driver Shari Bilden from Northwood, was also taken to the hospital.

Tragically, Archie Gronvold, the pickup truck’s driver, lost his life at the scene of the accident. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has temporarily closed Highway 32 in Nelson County, between Highway 15 and US 2, as they conduct an investigation into the tragic crash that unfolded on that fateful Thursday.
